The cross-device handoff is genuinely useful for a specific kind of work: long-running tasks you want to start, then leave. A research compilation, a document draft with multiple sources, a meeting brief pulled from calendar and email. You set the task, step away, and Cowork routes a notification to your phone when it needs a decision or when it’s done.
For short tasks, Claude.ai chat is faster. The overhead of a Cowork session is worth it only when the task is complex enough to justify the setup.

Two things worth watching. First, permission scopes: as Cowork connects to more tools across devices, what it can access becomes a real security question on managed work devices. Second, the EU AI labelling requirement effective August 2, 2026 requires AI-generated content to be clearly identified. Anthropic’s rule for Cowork is that nothing is sent without user confirmation, which handles the compliance requirement in practice.

Cowork on web and mobile is worth enabling if you’re already on a Max plan, specifically for the cross-device handoff on tasks you’d otherwise have to babysit. It’s not a replacement for the desktop app on anything that needs local file access or browser control, and it’s not worth upgrading to Max just for this feature alone.
